Reminder: Vote in next Tuesday’s primary election
The primary election is next Tuesday, Aug. 2, and I hope you will support the University of Kansas by voting for legislative candidates who are proponents of higher education. This election year is critical to the future of Kansas colleges and universities. In recent years, state financial support for KU has fallen dramatically:
- From fiscal year 2000 to fiscal year 2016, state funding for KU decreased by $182 million.
- Though the total per-student cost of education has declined from $22,748 to $22,034, students and families now bear most of the burden.
- In fiscal year 2000, state funds provided 71.4 percent of the total cost per student, while tuition dollars paid 28.6 percent. In fall 2016, students and their families will pay 58.8 percent of the cost, and state funds will provide 41.2 percent.
Please make higher education a key consideration as you cast your vote on Aug. 2—and encourage your fellow citizens to do the same. To find your polling location, visit voteks.org.
If you cannot vote on Tuesday, you can vote early or mail an absentee ballot form through Monday, Aug. 1.
Thanks for your KU loyalty as an Alumni Association member.
