Dear Jayhawk for Higher Education,
Chancellor Doug Girod testified on Monday before key legislative committees to highlight KU’s dramatic economic impact. His presentation offers vivid examples of the ways in which KU provides:
• an economic engine and talent magnet for Kansas
• a tremendous Return on Investment for taxpayers
This critical impact cannot continue without adequate state support. The Kansas Board of Regents has proposed a $50 million base-budget increase for the state’s six universities. Governor Laura Kelly recommended an $11.9 million increase.
On Monday, the House Appropriations Committee will determine its budget proposal. The Senate Ways and Means Committee also will meet early next week to finalize the Senate’s proposal.
Please reach out this weekend to members of both committees and urge them to add more base-budget funding for higher education to the governor’s recommendation.
Without the state’s significant reinvestment in higher education, KU and other universities cannot hold tuition costs steady and still meet basic operating expenses for the programs that serve Kansas communities.
I ask you to contact committee members from your community and surrounding area—and any other members with whom you have a connection—and urge them to increase base-budget funding for the state’s universities.
As always, the University and the Alumni Association are deeply grateful for your advocacy and loyalty.
Thank you—and Rock Chalk!
