Assistant Editor, Kansas Alumni magazine

Position Summary

The assistant editor is responsible for researching, reporting, writing and editing content for Kansas Alumni magazine and other print and digital publications.

Works closely with associate editors, creative director, digital media team, all program directors and the alumni biographical records team at KU Endowment

Must be able to report, conduct interviews, research, write and edit a wide variety of communications with the utmost attention to detail, accuracy and high editorial standards; this position also requires creativity and enterprise to offer and develop story ideas and contribute to content planning

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the Alumni Association (“Association”)’s mission, and its various programs, along with the audiences these programs serve
  • Writes Class Notes and In Memory sections of Kansas Alumni magazine, working with alumni biographical records team at KU Endowment and the magazine team to ensure accuracy and timely publication; assists in monitoring online Class Notes and photo submissions
  • Writes varied stories for Kansas Alumni magazine in print and digital media and contributes ideas in editorial planning meetings
  • Assists in transferring print content to and producing timely, relevant content for the website between the magazine’s quarterly print editions
  • Collaborates with all communications team members and program directors to create promotional copy as needed
  • Assists in writing or copy editing news releases and other communications for special events, including Homecoming and other events and programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Training and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, strategic communications, or comparable discipline and a minimum of three years’ experience in publishing; experience in higher education or another nonprofit setting preferred

Knowledge, abilities and skills

  • Superior written and spoken English, including excellent command of grammar and usage and Associated Press style; demonstrated skills in reporting, interviewing, writing and editing for print and digital media; knowledge of communications and marketing principles
  • Proficiency and/or ability to learn and master software programs including Microsoft Word, Teams and other applications; Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign templates; Alumni/Endowment biographical database; WordPress; Trello; and other proprietary software as needed
  • Ability to independently initiate, organize and follow through with assignments and establish and maintain effective working relationships both within and outside the Association
  • Professional appearance, maturity, cultural depth and breadth, discipline, creativity and integrity; willingness and availability to work nights and weekends as required
