Primary Accountability

The Director or Assistant Vice President of Strategic Communications and Storytelling works cross-functionally across the organization to develop a content strategy aligned with the Kansas University Alumni Association’s (KUAA) strategic plan. Responsible for supervising, directing, and developing content for numerous KUAA communications.

Major Duties

  • Craft a modern, alumni and member-centric digital marketing communications strategy in conjunction with senior management
  • Help grow KUAA’s audience, increase student and alumni member engagement, and elevate KUAA’s brand with a focus on stories that demonstrate the impact and value of KUAA programs and services and content that delivers value for KUAA members, donors, and corporate partners. This strategy will apply to all aspects of KUAA’s work and will touch every department in our organization.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a priority, integrated into the content strategy, and be delivered authentically across channels.
  • Lead the marcom strategy implementation across the organization which includes digital content strategy, social media engagement, email marketing, mobile app, web, interactive, audio and video content, membership and fundraising collateral, presentations and other marcom products for KUAA
  • Create high-quality, original thought leadership content for all of KUAA’s communication channels including our website, social media platforms, email newsletters, mobile app, and other customized communications
  • Seek the latest relevant research in creative, value-added corporate partner activation across all channels
  • Enhance the KUAA’s social media presence by developing and executing a social media strategy that raises awareness and builds engagement around KUAA’s strategic goals, programs, corporate partnerships and thought leadership.
  • Leverage data analytics and other metrics to measure success by analyzing web traffic, email statistics and other relevant community engagement data. Use these measures to assess and report on the effectiveness of association communications and improve future strategies and tactics to drive quality engagement and grow our audience.
  • Exceptional project management to ensure deadlines are met and all marketing and communications materials are aligned with KUAA’s strategic vision, and brand standards.
  • Collaborate with other departments and KUAA peers to stay abreast on the latest industry news, trends, and best practices.
  • Perform other duties as directed or required.

Qualifications and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, journalism, English, or comparable discipline preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated proficiency in grammar, proofreading, and AP Style
  • Passion for supporting Association impact and knowledge of KU history and traditions.
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for current trends in digital and social media marketing and communications
  • Ability to remain informed about University and KUAA programs that serve students & alumni from diverse backgrounds.
  • Collaborative work and management styles
  • Outstanding eye for modern design
  • Can-do work ethic, excellent time management and critical thinking skills, with a hands-on approach and team-oriented attitude
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment with impeccable customer service skills and temperament; calm under pressure
  • Ability to read, comprehend and synthesize written materials, especially related to organizational management, economic trends, and public policy
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently to prioritize competing tasks, accomplish objectives, and meet deadlines
  • Experience with leveraging data analytics to improve marketing and engagement outcomes
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Proficiency with website CMS and email marketing service providers
  • Knowledge of and experience in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Maturity, cultural depth and breadth, discipline, creativity, initiative, and integrity.

Physical/Environmental Demands

  • Frequent: repetitive hand motion (such as typing), sitting, hearing, listening, talking (on phone, in person), reading (including computers screens, mail), and interaction with staff, alumni, students, senior level executives and colleagues across the University, and vendors.
  • Occasional: work outside normal business hours including nights and weekends; travel by car or plane to offsite meetings and events; and exposure to noise and temperature variances at both indoor and outdoor events
