She and her husband, Joe, were expecting their first child and needed a changing table for their Chicago home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had no money, so we took the dresser and we painted it,\u201d says Piercy, j\u201907. After spiffing up the piece in a light gray\u2014the couple\u2019s first attempt at such a project\u2014\u201cI thought, \u2018Let\u2019s sell this one, and we\u2019ll do a better job next time,\u2019\u201d Piercy says. \u201cIt ended up selling in five minutes on Craigslist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten years and thousands of refurbished pieces later, Meg and Joe\u2019s knack for giving new life to existing furniture is not only the foundation of their business, <a href=\"https:\/\/megmade.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/megmade.com\/\">MegMade<\/a>, but also the focus of the 2022 HGTV show \u201cRenovation Goldmine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the eight-episode series, now streaming on Discovery Plus, the Piercys tackle renovations in which they prioritize restoring or reimagining what homeowners already have. Ordinary or overlooked items\u2014the \u201cgold\u201d\u2014become newfound points of elegance, charm or utility thanks to the Piercys\u2019 thoughtful approach that balances improvement with preservation. A vintage dresser repurposed as a bathroom vanity, a castoff kitchen island converted to shelving, a humdrum hutch enlivened through color are among the transformations featured in \u201cRenovation Goldmine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing the before-and-after in something is really powerful,\u201d Piercy says. \u201cPutting people\u2019s homes together affordably and creatively and uniquely them\u2014it changes their lives, and it\u2019s great to be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piercy\u2019s own \u201cbefore\u201d included studying strategic communications in the School of Journalism and interning at a public relations agency in Kansas City, her hometown. Shortly after graduation, she and four friends from KU moved to Chicago, where she worked briefly in IT consulting and then in fundraising for a nonprofit that served youth in the city\u2019s high-poverty areas. She met Joe on a blind date, and the couple married in 2009. Three years later came the fateful encounter with the discarded dresser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Though MegMade is best known for its furniture restorations, Meg Piercy is also an accomplished interior designer. Her best advice for styling your space? \u201cListen to your home first. Unless you have 14-foot ceilings and gigantic rooms, Pinterest may not be the best place to get inspiration.\u201d<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe\u2019s background in flipping houses was an asset as the Piercys pursued furniture restoration, and the pair honed their skills with YouTube tutorials and guidance from those more experienced in the craft. \u201cWe were never proud, and we always wanted to learn,\u201d Piercy says. \u201cAnd we were OK with failing so we could learn how to do it better.\u201d They worked from their basement and sold their products on Craigslist until officially launching MegMade in 2013. (The name arose from the common refrain of \u201cMeg made this\u201d and \u201cMeg made that\u201d in Joe\u2019s conversations with customers.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, MegMade has 12 full-time employees and consists of a 10,000-square-foot store and warehouse and a 5,000-square-foot production facility in Chicago\u2019s Logan Square neighborhood. Customers can choose (in person or on <a href=\"https:\/\/megmade.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/megmade.com\/\">MegMade.com<\/a>) a vintage piece from the Piercys\u2019 sizable collection to have customized, or they can bring in a piece of their own to be refinished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, the Piercys have branched out from furniture flipping to offer home decor, a paint line and interior design services. (Meg\u2019s flair for creating attractive spaces is a core component of \u201cRenovation Goldmine.\u201d) The Piercy family has also grown: Meg and Joe are parents of sons Wells, 10; Brooks, 8; and Finn, 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piercy credits marketing know-how she learned at KU with helping drive MegMade\u2019s success. She cultivated the brand\u2019s look and feel with intention and was diligent in keeping the branding consistent in all aspects of the business. She also built an effective social media presence, and these days shares MegMade\u2019s handiwork and tidbits of DIY how-to with more than 60,000 Instagram followers. \u201cYou could be doing the coolest thing in the world, but if you don\u2019t know how to market it, then you\u2019re never going to grow,\u201d Piercy says. In fact, \u201cRenovation Goldmine\u201d came about through connections the Piercys had established with owners of other Chicago-based home renovation businesses, who pointed TV producers interested in the topic the Piercys\u2019 way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy-Megmade.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy-Megmade.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Meg-Piercy-Megmade-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Meg and Joe Piercy<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For those keen to try their hand at furniture revival, \u201cDon\u2019t start with your family heirloom,\u201d Piercy advises with a laugh. \u201cChoose something easy first, with less detail, less design, less damage to fix. Start on something where you feel like you can gain confidence\u2014a picture frame, a lamp, a piece of wood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another tip: Rethink color in your home. \u201cI\u2019ve realized neutral isn\u2019t necessarily what people want; they just want it to be safe and they don\u2019t want it to be fussy,\u201d Piercy says. \u201cMy job is to listen and then to challenge them a little bit into stretching that into some color. Color, pattern and playfulness bring a lot of joy into a home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And though crimson and blue isn\u2019t one of Piercy\u2019s go-to color pairings at work\u2014\u201cI like to do KU decor in galleries, incorporated among other things, because the red and blue can be a little powerful,\u201d she says\u2014her ties to the Sunflower State are still a fixture at MegMade. \u201cWith the staff, the joke is, \u2018Every road leads back to Kansas,\u2019\u201d Piercy says, \u201cbecause I can find a connection with every single person who comes in the store.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Megan Hirt, c\u201908, j\u201908, is managing editor of Crimson &amp;
