A retired partner at the law firm Shook, Hardy &amp; Bacon in Kansas City, Gene practiced law for more than 60 years and has completed more than 1,300 pro bono adoptions of foster children. He and his wife, Sheila, founded the Kansas Foster and Adoptive Children Scholarship Fund, which has raised more than $1 million for college scholarships for those who have been in foster care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1964<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan Wohlgemuth Musbach<\/strong>, c\u201964, in June was honored by the National Council for History Education with the 2025 Paul A. Gagnon Prize, which recognizes exceptional scholarship and promotion of history education. Joan taught U.S. history in Missouri\u2019s Ladue School District for 38 years and continues to teach history classes through St. Louis Oasis, a lifelong learning program for older adults. She lives in Kirkwood, Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1965<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gregs Thomopulos<\/strong>, e\u201965, chairman emeritus of Stanley Consultants, in May was elected a distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He worked at Stanley Consultants for 51 years, eventually leading the company as president, CEO and chairman of the board. Gregs is a KU Endowment trustee. He and his wife, Mettie, live in Iowa City, Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1967<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Robert Thompson<\/strong>, e\u201967, is retired from a 40-year career in computer science. He and his wife, Susan, live in Spring Hill and have two adult children and five grandchildren. Their grandson, Quintin, is a sophomore in the School of Engineering and a fifth-generation Jayhawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1968<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Robert Campbell<\/strong>, j\u201968, teaches ethics in the school of management at the University of California San Diego and is the founding head coach of UCSD\u2019s speech and debate team, which this year won its fifth consecutive Southern California regional championship. He lives in Encinitas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1969<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jane Waggoner Deschner<\/strong>, c\u201969, is a mixed-media artist based in Billings, Montana, whose work has been shown in art museums and galleries across the U.S. Her latest immersive installation, \u201cRemember me: A collective narrative in found words and photographs,\u201d was recently displayed at the Museum of Art Fort Collins in Colorado and featured in the online photography journal Lenscratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jerome Kootman<\/strong>, b\u201969, retired recently from his 56-year career as a CPA. He was managing partner at the firm Israel, Kootman &amp; Co. in Metuchen, New Jersey. He splits his time between Long Beach Island in New Jersey and St. Maarten in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1970<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kenneth Gaines<\/strong>, d\u201970, l\u201976, in April was honored by the School of Law with its 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award. He is professor emeritus of law at the University of South Carolina, where he taught for 45 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1972<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nancy Cleveland Asay<\/strong>, f\u201972, is an Overland Park-based interior designer who specializes in space planning and aging in place. She is finance director for the Missouri West\/Kansas chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1974<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Bowman<\/strong>, c\u201974, l\u201980, is in his 10th year teaching international energy arbitration at Georgetown University. He is retired from the law firm King &amp; Spalding and serves as an arbitrator, expert and teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1975<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mike McClintick<\/strong>, p\u201975, has practiced family medicine in Eureka for 45 years. He and his wife, Linda, have four children: <strong>Amy McClintick Soetaert<\/strong>, c\u201999; <strong>Scott<\/strong>, c\u201901; <strong>Chad<\/strong>, c\u201903; and <strong>Matthew<\/strong>, c\u201910.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Richard Yoxall<\/strong>, b\u201975, retired recently from practicing law. He and his wife, <strong>Andrea Groves Yoxall<\/strong>, j\u201976, live in Lawrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1976<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dennis Ellsworth<\/strong>, j\u201976, in September was inducted into the Missouri Newspaper Hall of Fame and also received the Sunshine Hero Award for his advocacy for open government meetings and records. He was executive editor of the St. Joseph News-Press for more than 18 years and previously worked at newspapers in Kansas, Florida and Texas. Dennis and his wife, <strong>Deborah Moore Ellsworth<\/strong>, c\u201975, are retired in Grain Valley, Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paula Martin<\/strong>, c\u201976, l\u201981, in April received the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Law. She is retired as a district court judge for Kansas\u2019 7th Judicial District, in Douglas County, where she served for 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1977<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Annette Stanton<\/strong>, c\u201977, in June was honored by the Society for Health Psychology, part of the American Psychological Association, with its Nathan W. Perry Jr. Award for Career Service to Health Psychology. She is a distinguished professor at UCLA, where she chaired the psychology department from 2019 to 2024. One of her daughters, <strong>Sarah Green Hadley<\/strong>, b\u201998, is a Jayhawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1979<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Barney McCoy<\/strong>, j\u201979, directed and produced the PBS documentary \u201cRunning Towards the Fire: A War Correspondent\u2019s Story,\u201d which highlights the experiences of journalist Robert Reuben, who parachuted into Normandy, France, with U.S. troops on D-Day, and other WWII correspondents. Barney is a professor in the college of journalism and mass communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Laverne Smith<\/strong>, c\u201979, a former KU football player and track-and-field athlete, in August was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. As a running back at KU, he set school records for career rushing yards, touchdowns and 100-yard games. Laverne won Big 8 titles in the 100-meter dash and 440-yard relay in 1976, and his 100-meter time of 10.07 seconds remains a KU record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clifford Wiley<\/strong>, c\u201979, l\u201983, in August was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. A KU track-and-field athlete, Cliff was a 13-time NCAA All-American and a member of KU\u2019s 1977 national championship team in the 4&#215;400 relay. He was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team and won the 400-meter event at the 1981 Athletics World Cup and 1983 Pan American Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1982<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Greg Baker<\/strong>, c\u201982, b\u201983, is executive vice president and chief lending officer at Branson Bank in Branson, Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Christine Dillon Bradley<\/strong>, n\u201982, is retired from the Children\u2019s Hospital Association in Lenexa, where she was director of learning and performance for the association\u2019s Pediatric Learning Solutions program for 24 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1983<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Frank Tsuru<\/strong>, e\u201983, in May received the 2025 Distinguished Engineering Service Award from the School of Engineering. He is co-founder and CEO of Momentum Midstream, an oil and gas infrastructure company. He and his wife, <strong>Stephanie Skelton Tsuru<\/strong>, h\u201983, live in Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1984<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Doug Duncan<\/strong>, c\u201984, in May was appointed senior vice president and chief information officer at NI Holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kelly McKinney<\/strong>, e\u201984, is vice president of emergency management and enterprise resilience at NYU Langone Health in New York City and an adjunct instructor in the school of professional studies at NYU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1985<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tammy Dodson<\/strong>, j\u201985, g\u201991, is an attorney in private practice in Lee\u2019s Summit, Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Rau<\/strong>, b\u201985, in April was promoted to chief operating officer at World Kinect Corp., a global energy management company, where he has worked since 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrea Mitchell Walsh<\/strong>, b\u201985, c\u201985, in July was inducted into the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame. She is president and CEO of HealthPartners, a Minnesota-based health care system where she has worked for more than three decades. Andrea and her husband, <strong>Tim<\/strong>, c\u201988, have three adult children. Their sons, <strong>Mitch<\/strong>, c\u201912, and <strong>Tom<\/strong>, b\u201914, are Jayhawks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1986<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jennifer Stone Allen<\/strong>, n\u201986, is the rector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andy Mergenmeier<\/strong>, e\u201986, in May was named director of pavement and safety engineering at WDM USA, a road surveying and consulting company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1987<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Dwyer<\/strong>, h\u201987, g\u201997, in July was named CEO of Cincinnati Rehabilitation Hospital in Blue Ash, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michelle Tyrene Johnson<\/strong>, j\u201987, in September was awarded the 2025 Vernon Jarrett Medal for Journalistic Excellence, which honors a journalist whose work has made a significant impact on Black life in the U.S. Michelle is senior producer at Louisville Public Media and hosts its \u201cRace Unwrapped\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mike Lauer<\/strong>, e\u201987, is the Association for Manufacturing Technology\u2019s global services director for the Southeast Asia region. He is based in Bangkok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Perkins<\/strong>, c\u201987, g\u201989, in August became CEO of Great Rivers Greenway, a public agency that maintains a network of outdoor spaces in the St. Louis region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1988<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe Brashier<\/strong>, DMA\u201988, in August was named conductor of the Brevard Community Band in Brevard, North Carolina. He is retired as director of bands at Valdosta State University in Georgia, where he worked for 21 years. He and his wife, Susan, a former oboe professor at KU, live in Hendersonville, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jeff Foster<\/strong>, c\u201988, is general manager of brand and community partnerships for the Missouri State High School Activities Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Reynolds<\/strong>, m\u201988, retired in June after 30 years practicing ophthalmology in Emporia, where he was a partner at Reynolds and Anliker Eye Physicians and Surgeons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1989<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Karoline Knock Felts<\/strong>, c\u201989, is associate vice chancellor for advancement services for The University of Texas System, which comprises 13 academic and health institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scott Kreamer<\/strong>, l\u201989, in May was elected president of Lawyers for Civil Justice, an advocacy organization focused on improving the procedural fairness and efficiency of the U.S. civil litigation system. Scott is a trial attorney and managing member at Baker Sterchi Cowden &amp; Rice in the law firm\u2019s Kansas City office. He and his wife, Susan, live in Leawood and have three adult children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jan\u00e9e Bryan Mauney<\/strong>, b\u201989, is a senior sales executive at Wolters Kluwer for the company\u2019s environment, health and safety software, Enablon. She and her husband, Brian, live in the Des Moines, Iowa, area and have a son, Hugo, who is a senior in the School of Engineering, and a daughter, Estelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1990<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marshall Clark<\/strong>, c\u201990, is an investigator with the Texas Department of Insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Garrett<\/strong>, b\u201990, in May was named chief people officer at Garney, a water and wastewater infrastructure firm based in Kansas City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anne Austin Pearce<\/strong>, f\u201990, is a painter and mixed-media artist whose work is in numerous art museums across the U.S., including the Spencer Museum of Art. Her latest solo exhibition, \u201cReturned to Universe,\u201d debuted at the Walter Maciel Gallery in Los Angeles in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leslie Schaaf Treas<\/strong>, g\u201990, PhD\u201906, received the 2025 Alumni Achievement Award from the Penn State college of nursing. After working as a nurse practitioner and clinical researcher, Leslie co-founded ATI Nursing Education, which provides learning and assessment tools for nursing students. She has co-authored multiple nursing textbooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1991<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audra Langford Alexander<\/strong>, j\u201991, is senior vice president of global marketing for the apparel company Jockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Brady<\/strong>, m\u201991, is chief medical officer at AdventHealth\u2019s Lenexa City Center hospital in Lenexa, which opened in July. He has been an anesthesiologist with AdventHealth since 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nancy Knapp Buese<\/strong>, b\u201991, is chief financial officer at CRH, a global building materials company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lori Mitchell<\/strong>, d\u201991, is a middle school counselor in the Geary County school district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jennifer Remsberg<\/strong>, j\u201991, is a development coordinator for Wichita Collegiate School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lawrence Tsen<\/strong>, m\u201991, received the 2025 Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. He is professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and director of the Human Research Office at Mass General Brigham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1992<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Fritch<\/strong>, g\u201992, PhD\u201994, is provost and vice president for academic affairs at Washburn University in Topeka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Melissa Alberts Lackey<\/strong>, j\u201992, in April was named to the St. Louis Titan 100 Hall of Fame, which recognizes the city\u2019s top business leaders. In July she was named enterprise president at Dix &amp; Eaton, a strategic communications and marketing firm. She sold her marketing agency, Standing Partnership, to Dix &amp; Eaton in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sushmeeta \u201cJolly\u201d Nanda<\/strong>, e\u201992, is founder and CEO of Altheia, a health care analytics and enablement platform. She and her husband, Michael Otto, live in Orono, Minnesota, and have a son, Jayden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rochelle Olson<\/strong>, g\u201992, is an opinion columnist at The Minnesota Star Tribune. She has worked at the newspaper for 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shanon Ehmke Reedy<\/strong>, c\u201992, in June was named dean of communication studies and social sciences at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dan Wiley<\/strong>, l\u201992, in August was elected national commander of the American Legion. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Dan is a retired district court judge for Kansas\u2019 1st Judicial District, which serves Atchison and Leavenworth counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1993<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maurice Duggins<\/strong>, m\u201993, is chief medical officer at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph in Wichita and a clinical associate professor in the KU School of Medicine-Wichita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brenda Diehl Gasperich<\/strong>, e\u201993, is a senior project manager at the civil engineering firm Quiddity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chad Gunther<\/strong>, b\u201993, is founder and managing partner at Cottonwood Capital Group in Kansas City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe McClain<\/strong>, c\u201993, is president of Mack McClain &amp; Associates, a sales agency that serves the plumbing and mechanical industries and has offices in five states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>James Walker<\/strong>, c\u201993, m\u201901, is chair and program director of the anesthesiology department in the KU School of Medicine-Wichita. He is also medical director of the neurocritical care unit and stroke center at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ashley Wilson<\/strong>, e\u201993, g\u201997, PhD\u201901, is an adjunct faculty member at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1994<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Laura Miles Hibberts<\/strong>, p\u201994, is a pharmacist at the LMH Health System outpatient pharmacy in Lawrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Manica<\/strong>, a\u201994, owner and president of Kansas City-based Manica Architecture, is the architect for the Oklahoma City Thunder\u2019s new arena. Construction of the arena is scheduled to begin next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Bangert Randolph<\/strong>, c\u201994, is principal designer at Minnesota-based Randolph Interior Design. She founded the firm in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark White<\/strong>, g\u201994, PhD\u201999, retired in June as executive director of the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1995<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dana Ault-Rich\u00e9<\/strong>, PhD\u201995, is an executive in the biotechnology industry. He has founded six biotech companies and served as CEO for each, most recently Pranas Neuro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Christi Barb<\/strong>, c\u201995, is a speech coach and owns Adastra Speech, through which she helps those who\u2019ve learned English as a second language improve their spoken communication skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kyle Beran<\/strong>, PhD\u201995, is professor and chair of the department of chemistry and biochemistry at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. He is in his sixth and final year as the chief reader for the Advanced Placement Chemistry program, overseeing the scoring of more than 150,000 AP Chemistry exams submitted annually by U.S. and international high school students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kent Qandil<\/strong>, c\u201995, g\u201997, is a business development officer at Navy Federal Credit Union. He lives in Vienna, Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1996<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ron Bailey<\/strong>, c\u201996, is president of Precision Science, which manufactures pharmaceuticals for the animal health industry. He lives in Phoenix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stuart Benkert<\/strong>, g\u201996, PhD\u201998, is dean of the college of fine arts and communication at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lorianne Fought<\/strong>, g\u201996, an agricultural research scientist, is director of business services at Victory Crop Consultants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monique Garcia<\/strong>, c\u201996, in July was named one of the Wichita Business Journal\u2019s 2025 Women in Business honorees. She owns Garcia Group, which works with state and federal agencies to expand access to health care in underserved communities. Monique serves on KU Alumni\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jason Leiker<\/strong>, c\u201996, l\u201901, g\u201903, in April joined Fox Rothschild as a partner in the litigation department in the law firm\u2019s Kansas City office. He and his wife, <strong>Amiee Ford<\/strong>, PharmD\u201900, live in Prairie Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mitchell McKinney<\/strong>, PhD\u201996, in July joined the University of Toledo as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Colleen McCain Nelson<\/strong>, j\u201996, in July was named executive editor of The Dallas Morning News. She previously worked at the newspaper from 2000 to 2012 and was part of the team that won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing. She is a member of the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame and KU Women\u2019s Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1997<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dani Hersma Beaver<\/strong>, b\u201997, is a residential realtor at Parkway Real Estate in Prairie Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kristin Moore Bechard<\/strong>, b\u201997, g\u201900, in July was named chief financial officer and treasurer at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City.
