{"id":789,"date":"2025-05-01T03:34:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T08:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/?p=789"},"modified":"2026-03-04T16:02:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T22:02:44","slug":"kevin-willmott-ku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/kevin-willmott-ku\/","title":{"rendered":"Wrap party: Film festival spotlights director Kevin Willmott\u2019s career"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A festival honoring the retirement of Kevin Willmott, professor emeritus of film &amp; media studies, at Liberty Hall in February screened four films written and directed by the Academy Award winner: \u201cC.S.A.: Confederate States of America\u201d (2004), \u201cThe Only Good Indian\u201d (2009), \u201cDestination Planet Negro\u201d (2013) and \u201cJayhawkers\u201d (2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus on Willmott\u2019s early work highlighted a key element of the Junction City native\u2019s approach to filmmaking, said his longtime creative partner and fellow film professor Matt Jacobson at the opening of the celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore his rise to fame with films like \u2018Chi-Raq\u2019 and \u2018BlacKkKlansman\u2019 and \u2018Da Five Bloods,\u2019 Kevin was busy telling stories about race, politics, power and justice with a decidedly Midwestern accent,\u201d Jacobson told festival attendees. \u201cHe decided after going to school at NYU that he was going to come back to Kansas to tell the stories that he felt were important to people here in the Midwest, and to hopefully get those stories heard completely across the United States and across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those early movies are an important part of Willmott\u2019s filmography, Jacobson noted, \u201cnot just because of the subject matter, but because they showed a whole generation of filmmakers and students that you can make movies in Kansas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Willmott reflected on the communal spirit that is a hallmark of so many of his film projects, joking that \u201cC.S.A.\u201d \u201cwas a total community effort: I think half of the town was in that movie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one of the things that kind of made me stay in Lawrence, having KU and having Matt Jacobson and Mark (von Schlemmer, editor of many Willmott films) and creating a community of film people and a company of actors,\u201d Willmott added. \u201cWe were all friends, really. There were projects where they got paid to work with me, and projects where they didn\u2019t get paid and they were kind enough to lend me their talent. I never even attempted to try to get money from Hollywood, because I knew they wouldn\u2019t understand what the hell I was trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After \u201cC.S.A.\u201d drew support from director Spike Lee, the two began a writing collaboration that led to \u201cChi-Raq,\u201d \u201cDa 5 Bloods\u201d and \u201cBlacKkKlansman.\u201d For the latter film, Willmott and Lee shared an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"617\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/Kevin-Willmott.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/Kevin-Willmott.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/Kevin-Willmott-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Kevin Willmott<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academy Award led to more high-profile screenwriting assignments for Willmott, but he continued making films with a local focus. His most recent film, \u201cThe Heroic True-Life Adventures of Alvin Brooks,\u201d portrays the life story of the Kansas City, Missouri, activist and leader. He wrote and directed \u201cNo Place Like Home: The Struggle Against Hate in Kansas\u201d about LGBTQ rights in the state, and \u201cWilliam Allen White: What\u2019s the Matter With Kansas,\u201d a biopic about the newspaper editor and School of Journalism namesake known as the Sage of Emporia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although retirement brings down the curtain on Willmott\u2019s teaching career, his film work continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cActually this is probably one of the busiest periods of my whole career,\u201d Willmott told \u201cUp To Date\u201d host Steve Kraske during a February appearance on the KCUR radio show. \u201cSince winning the award, it has really stepped up the pace of projects, especially the writing projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a tough decision. I really love teaching, and KU has been a big part of my life, a great part of my life, but because I am so busy now with writing films (and) directing a new movie, it\u2019s just a really busy time and I have to give it my entire focus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Steven Hill is associate editor of Crimson &amp;
