{"id":791,"date":"2025-11-01T15:12:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T20:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/?p=791"},"modified":"2025-12-12T12:15:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T18:15:14","slug":"evelyn-magley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/evelyn-magley\/","title":{"rendered":"KU alumna enriches lives, communities through \u2018grassroots\u2019 basketball"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Yes, Evelyn Greer Magley is married to a former KU basketball player, and the sport has been a large part of her life for the better part of their 44 years together. But no, she did not expect to become a trailblazer in basketball herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like I sat around and said, \u2018When I grow up, I\u2019m going to own a men\u2019s professional basketball league,\u2019\u201d says Magley, d\u201981, d\u201981, who in 2018 founded <a href=\"https:\/\/thebasketballleague.net\/\">The Basketball League<\/a> (TBL) and is the first Black woman to own a male professional sports league. \u201cI mean, never. It wasn\u2019t something that was on my radar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TBL originated from an unlikely place: Magley\u2019s bathroom floor, where she retreated one night, \u201cbawling my eyes out because of different things that were going on in our lives personally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To hear her tell it, she talked to God on that bathroom floor: \u201cAnd I was just really crying out to Him, and I was in a bad place,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I heard a very still voice that said, \u2018Why are you crying?\u2019\u201d And then, \u201c\u2018Do you trust Me?\u2019\u201d From there, Magley says, the idea came to start her own basketball league.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She resisted: \u201c\u2018Start my own league?\u2019 I said. \u2018But I\u2019m a retired music teacher!\u2019\u201d The directive didn\u2019t waver. She ran to wake up her husband, David, c\u201982, a former commissioner of the National Basketball League of Canada. And the rest, as they say, is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a God-given vision,\u201d Magley says of TBL\u2019s roots. \u201cIt is simply using the game of basketball to show love to community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/Evelyn-Magley-basketball.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-716\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/Evelyn-Magley-basketball.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/Evelyn-Magley-basketball-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Evelyn Magley<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial vision in those early ideating hours was to \u201cgo out into communities, we\u2019ll see the basketball players as being a real person and not just an athlete,\u201d Magley remembers. \u201cWe\u2019ll be able to teach life skills.\u201d She and David stayed up until 5 a.m. \u201cI can\u2019t even describe it,\u201d Magley says. \u201cI was so wired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, she went to the bank with \u201c$20 and a vision.\u201d TBL began with eight teams. Today, seven years since its launch, TBL has 35 teams across the U.S. and Canada, as well as another league, the Basketball Super League, which has a separate season from TBL\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a league that offers opportunities for communities that don\u2019t have a pro basketball team in their community,\u201d explains Magley, who is also the league\u2019s CEO. \u201cAnd the communities that we\u2019re in, our teams are literally community assets. We\u2019re not the NBA, and we\u2019re not trying to be the NBA. We\u2019re boots on concrete. We are grassroots basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TBL\u2019s footprint extends coast to coast, with teams based in cities including Halifax, Nova Scotia; Fayetteville, North Carolina; Enid, Oklahoma; Great Falls, Montana; and Long Beach, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TBL, at present, is all male. Athletes get paid, and \u201cthey get an opportunity to play at the highest level below the G League in America,\u201d Magley adds. In addition to the players, the league creates jobs for numerous other community members, from dancers to statisticians to hospitality workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have a platform that the community can come together, show their gifts and their talents and their strengths, and bring something to a community that they can participate in and also reap the rewards financially by having streams of revenue that are now going to come into that community,\u201d Magley says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TBL is headquartered in Indianapolis\u2014where David was Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1978\u2014and Magley knows she\u2019s \u201cdefinitely in a man\u2019s world in this sport of basketball, being that it\u2019s a men\u2019s pro league,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been a real experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/The-Basketball-League.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/The-Basketball-League.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/The-Basketball-League-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/11\/The-Basketball-League-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Magley energizes the crowd during a TBL match between the Albany Patroons and the New York Phoenix in Schenectady, New York.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Magley is from the Rosedale neighborhood in Kansas City and studied music therapy and music education at KU before becoming a music teacher. Looking back on her KU years, Magley says she \u201clearned music therapy, and I learned a lot about teaching and people and life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I went to the University of Kansas, it was one of the most remarkable experiences that I think I could have had,\u201d she says. She points to KU\u2019s international population and getting to meet people from so many cultures as a turning point for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those welcome connections was David, whom she met on a blind date. At the time, he hadn\u2019t firmly committed to playing basketball at KU and was being recruited by other schools. But he went home to Indiana after that blind date and told his brother that, while he still didn\u2019t know where he was going to school, \u201cI know I just met my wife.\u201d David chose KU, he and Evelyn began dating, and they married right before his senior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David is now president of TBL, and the league has a staff of five. Magley says she sees TBL expanding beyond the U.S. and Canada, and eventually adding women\u2019s basketball too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to have a passion,\u201d Magley says of what keeps her going in her work. \u201cYou have to believe; you have to have a reason. For me, that reason has to be beyond me, because if this were about me, I would\u2019ve given up a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard, it\u2019s difficult,\u201d she continues, \u201cbecause you\u2019re going to have to sacrifice a lot of yourself to meet what is required to touch and change lives. You can\u2019t just be about yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TBL\u2019s tagline is \u201cWhere the Spirit of the game lives\u201d\u2014with the \u201cs\u201d on spirit intentionally capitalized, hearkening back to the league\u2019s tear-soaked, bathroom-floor beginning.
