{"id":936,"date":"2024-11-01T15:57:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T20:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/?p=936"},"modified":"2025-12-23T15:42:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T21:42:00","slug":"dracula-daily-matt-kirkland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/dracula-daily-matt-kirkland\/","title":{"rendered":"Dracula, bite-sized"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Imagine you discovered a novel you really liked, started a book club to share it with others, and more than 250,000 people showed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s pretty much what happened to Matt Kirkland when he created <a href=\"https:\/\/draculadaily.com\/\">Dracula Daily<\/a>, an email newsletter that breaks Bram Stoker\u2019s classic vampire novel into sections that each encompass a single day of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because <em>Dracula<\/em> is an epistolary novel, told through diary entries, letters, telegrams and newspapers, every scene is pegged to a date. The story starts May 3 and ends Nov. 6. Kirkland figured that by delivering each passage to inboxes on the day of the year it takes place in the novel, Dracula Daily could provide participants with a new way of reading the 125-year-old classic. And they\u2019d do it as a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was reading it in 2020, and that was the summer of not going places,\u201d says Kirkland, f\u201904, a web designer and co-founder of Brand New Box, a Lawrence design studio. \u201cWe were all missing human connection, so reading it together with a bunch of people sounded really appealing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Kirkland had no way of knowing was just how big that bunch would get\u2014and how idiosyncratic would be their take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, when Dracula Daily launched, about 1,500 people signed up to receive emails. Some passages spanned chapters; some were only a few sentences. Sometimes weeks passed without an email when nothing was happening in the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was originally intended as a one-off, but as May 2022 approached, Kirkland was surprised to see sign-ups had doubled. He decided to send out Dracula Daily a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"635\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily-768x488.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Matt Kirkland<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the May 3 launch approached, a funny thing happened to his passion project, which Kirkland self-deprecatingly describes as part of his \u201cbad habit of making silly side projects for the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It went viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was sitting in a baseball game refreshing the numbers because it was going from 10,000 to 20,000 to 30,000 to 40,000,\u201d Kirkland recalls. \u201cIt was like, \u2018I think this thing\u2019s going to cross 100,000 people before the seventh inning.\u2019 It was hard to pay attention to the baseball game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, 200,000 people joined the readalong that year, and more than 250,000 signed up in 2023. Readers took to Tumblr, Twitter and other websites to post memes, comics, snarky commentary, original artwork and thoughtful takes \u201chalf a term paper long,\u201d says Kirkland, who was \u201centirely delighted\u201d by the outpouring. At one point, his humble project was getting more play on Tumblr than the new Marvel movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whole thing was shocking and just super fun,\u201d he says. \u201cSeeing all the ways people embraced it and responded\u2014it was like this big water-cooler moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he printed out screenshots to save his favorite commentaries, Kirkland hit on another idea: Why not publish a book that featured not only his \u201clightly remixed adaptation\u201d of <em>Dracula<\/em> (because Stoker\u2019s novel is not entirely chronological, Kirkland had to do some minor rearranging to put the text in strict linear order), but also a sampling of reader responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/publishing.andrewsmcmeel.com\/book\/dracula-daily-reading-bram-stokers-dracula-in-real-time-with-commentary-by-the-internet\/\"><em>Dracula Daily: Reading Bram Stoker\u2019s Dracula in Real Time With Commentary by the Internet<\/em><\/a>, published by Andrews McMeel last fall, is a striking embossed hardcover that sprinkles dozens of written and visual-art responses from Dracula Daily participants throughout the text as marginalia. The book was launched during Lawrence Public Library\u2019s Booktoberfest, the annual community reading event that distributes a selected title and holds public events encouraging discussion of the book\u2019s themes. The 2023 selection was <em>Dracula<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily-book.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily-book.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Dracula-Daily-book-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In his talk, Kirkland, a voracious reader, said the Dracula Daily phenomenon made the typical book experience feel like binge watching. \u201cOh, you\u2019ve dropped the whole season on me in one copy?\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, spreading <em>Dracula<\/em> over seven months\u2014by subscribing to the newsletter on the <a href=\"https:\/\/draculadaily.com\/\">Dracula Daily website<\/a> or by using a little self-discipline and \u201cthe innovative technology of a ribbon bookmark\u201d with the print version\u2014is an entirely different reading experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think having that interrupted, slow, spaced-out cadence gives us a new way to think about the book,\u201d Kirkland says. \u201cYou feel a little more suspense.
