{"id":997,"date":"2024-11-01T09:13:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T14:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/?p=997"},"modified":"2026-01-26T14:46:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T20:46:26","slug":"truman-capote-kansas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/truman-capote-kansas\/","title":{"rendered":"KU rewind: Truman Capote\u2019s 1966 visit to campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While traveling to Garden City with <em>In Cold Blood<\/em>\u2019s filmmaking team, to begin preproduction on the movie adaptation of his wildly popular true crime novel, Truman Capote on April 20, 1966, made a stop at Allen Fieldhouse in a rare public appearance. A crowd of about 3,000 KU students gathered to see the celebrated author and hear him share \u201cgory details\u201d from his \u201cblood-curdling best-seller.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawrence Journal-World reporter Marian Warden began her of-its-time coverage by describing outfits worn by \u201cKansas University coeds\u201d\u2014\u201cstretch pants, gym shoes, sweaters and skirts, cocktail dresses and high, spike heels.\u201d Men, she noted, were dressed casually in faded blue jeans or decked out in pressed suits and starched collars, making it \u201cdifficult for this observer to guess whether they were going to a jam session or a semi-formal dance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with breathless description of confounding fashion on a campus in the early throes of transition into late 1960s pop culture, Warden emphasized that before they heard a word of <em>In Cold Blood<\/em>, the eager attendees first sat through Capote reading\u2014in his \u201chigh, thin voice\u201d\u2014two now-revered short stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/KU-Truman-Capote.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/KU-Truman-Capote.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/KU-Truman-Capote-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/KU-Truman-Capote-768x504.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"765\" src=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Kansas-Truman-Capote.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Kansas-Truman-Capote.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kualumni.org\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Kansas-Truman-Capote-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>During his KU stopover, Truman Capote posed for news photographers (top) with hosts Alvin Dewey (left) and Odd Williams (right), and signed books at a breakfast for Garden City students.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The first, \u201cA Christmas Story,\u201d drew \u201ca healthy round of applause,\u201d and was followed by soft drinks and cigarettes as attendees sat through a 15-minute intermission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSoon the audience was again all set to hear \u2018In Cold Blood,\u2019\u201d Warden reported. \u201cBut instead they heard Capote\u2019s description of \u2018A Ride Through Spain.\u2019\u201d When the \u201cshort, greying author\u201d finally picked up his copy of the slim, genre-defining book, he read only from its introduction. To his audience\u2019s dismay, Capote shared none of the \u201cgruesome details of the stranger-than-fiction\u201d Clutter family murders that had shattered western Kansas seven years earlier, and certainly none of the insider gossip for which Capote was renowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe name \u2018Clutter\u2019,\u201d wrote the Journal-World\u2019s reporter, \u201cnever was mentioned during the entire program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kansas Bureau of Investigation special agent Alvin Dewey, <em>In Cold Blood<\/em>\u2019s fearless and capable protagonist, accompanied Capote and reportedly drew the largest applause of the evening. Dewey\u2019s son, Alvin III, c\u201969, g\u201971, who would go on to become assistant dean of admissions for the College of Liberal Arts &amp; Sciences, was a KU freshman at the time, and, with the help of Lawrence businessman Odd Williams, b\u201949, l\u201952, the KBI investigator had arranged for Capote\u2019s Lawrence stopover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capote and his entourage\u2014including director and screenwriter Richard Brooks and Columbia Pictures executive Tom Shaw\u2014stayed in Lawrence that evening, and the next morning joined KU students from the Garden City area for breakfast before departing for western Kansas on a chartered airplane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Chris Lazzarino, j\u201986, is associate editor of Crimson &amp;
