Annual Report 2022-’23

Dear Jayhawks,

The Alumni Association takes great pride in uniting and building relationships among our global community of 380,000 alumni, and we are dedicated to carrying forward the tradition of excellence that has defined generations of Jayhawks.

Our loyal and engaged alumni form the cornerstone of your vibrant alumni association, which serves to strengthen KU, enhance the Jayhawk experience and elevate the value of the KU degree.

The following is a brief snapshot of the remarkable impact the KU Alumni Association has made in the past year. The highlight was the grand opening of the industry-leading Jayhawk Welcome Center, a state-of-the-art facility that serves not only to attract the next generation of Jayhawks but also to nurture future alumni leaders and philanthropists. In addition, it provides a warm and enjoyable experience for Jayhawks returning to their KU home. Remarkably, the Jayhawk Welcome Center’s opening also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Adams Alumni Center’s completion and the 140th anniversary of the Alumni Association’s founding in 1883.

Heath Peterson, d’04, g’09 President
Keturah Harding Pohl, f’04, g’08 National Chair, 2022-’23

Your unwavering support and contributions have played vital roles in making KU the special, world-class institution it is today. Together, the Association and the University have made great strides, but we firmly believe that our best days lie ahead.

Thank you for all you do to preserve and enhance the unique spirit of KU!

Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!

Our Mission

We build lifelong relationships that strengthen the University of Kansas and the legacy of excellence embodied by its students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends.

Our Vision

The KU Alumni Association is a trusted, strategic partner in advancing the mission of the University of Kansas by uniting a global network of Jayhawks and increasing the value of KU degrees.

Our Commitments

Through the support of dues-paying members, donors and friends,
the KU Alumni Association creates positive impact for the University
of Kansas in five ways: We Advocate, Communicate, Recruit,
 Serve and Unite Jayhawks.

Highlights

Strategic Plan

The Association team, national Board of Directors and University stakeholders collaborated on a new strategic plan for FY ‘24-’26, with an internal focus on cross-functional teams, performance management and reaching Objectives and Key Results.

1. Lifelong Engagement

Develop relevant, custom and personalized Jayhawk experience to strengthen the value proposition for current and future alumni members and donors.

2. Inclusive Excellence

Strengthen and amplify our commitment to building an alumni association where all Jayhawks feel they belong.

3. Long-term Revenue Generation & Fiscal Health

Grow and diversify revenue to build future capacity, enhance the Jayhawk experience and strengthen KU.

4. Institutional Outreach & Support

Enhance and develop mutually beneficial strategic partnerships across the university.

5. Operational Effectiveness

Optimize organizational efficiency to achieve operational excellence and alignment in all aspects of Association management.

Culture and Inclusion

We are committed to Inclusive Excellence. We aim to foster a culture of inclusion and a strong, authentic sense of belonging for all Jayhawks past, present and future. We are building our culture from a foundation that reflects who we are and what we value. We’ve begun this work and made progress through strategic partnerships, inclusive engagement and education—to build and strengthen connections with and among our students and alumni.

We recognize the significance of fostering an environment where every Jayhawk alum feels KU is and will always be their home. By championing this principle, we aim to build connections that resonate across diverse backgrounds and experiences, ensuring that every Jayhawk feels valued, heard, and embraced within our Alumni Association.

Appreciate The Unique

We empower our community to authentically shine. We believe that differences are strengths, all humanity has value and all Jayhawks belong.

Cultivate The Core

We co-construct shared experiences and memories extending from KU’s campus to our global community, connected by what it means to be a Jayhawk.

Fuel The Future

We bravely reimagine the future together and boldly innovate to continue raising the standard for Jayhawk Excellence.

In ‘FY 23, we continued our commitment to Inclusive Excellence through our Jayhawks Belong video series. The series showcases our three Catalyst for Connection values. In Episode 1, “Appreciate the Unique”, we explore the diversity of our global network of Jayhawks.

Finances

*In FY23, the Alumni Association had unrealized losses of $889,000 on investments and permanently restricted endowment funds held by the KU Endowment Association that are not included in operating revenues. The Alumni Association also received donor-restricted contributions and other temporarily restricted income of $1.6 million that is excluded from operating revenues, principally for building expansion and renovation. As restricted income, these funds may be used only for their donor-designated purposes.

~FY23 operating expenses exclude $618,000 of depreciation expense associated with donor-funded property and equipment.

Student Alumni Network

The largest student organization on campus, the Student Alumni Network (SAN) continued to engage over 5,000 student members throughout the year with events including:

  • Meet Your Mentor
  • Student Alumni Network Week
  • Homecoming
  • Home Football/Hoops Fridays
  • Student Leadership Dinner
  • Finals Fest and Grad Celebration at the new Jayhawk Welcome Center.

Jayhawk Career Network

The Jayhawk Career Network provides students and alumni access to career resources, jobs, programs, events and connections at every stage of their career. Opportunities include:

  • Continuing education
  • Professional development
  • Career networking
  • KU Mentoring+
The KU Mentoring+ online platform serves as the University’s home for mentoring, networking, community and other opportunities. Hundreds of search filters make it easy to connect by location, major, industry and affinity. Since it launched in 2018, the platform has achieved:

  • more than 13,000 users
  • 27,000 messages sent
  • 8,400 alumni
  • 3,900 students
  • 7,000 jobs posted
  • 190 career partners

JCN Impact story

Sophie Moore (c’ 22 SPLH, Plano, Texas) used KU Mentoring+ to connect with alumna Melissa Kurrle (g’17), a speech-language pathologist at UCHealth in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Moore logged eight hours of virtual job shadowing experience with Kurrle. “I would watch her go through documentation, evaluations, assessments or treatments with different patients,” Moore says. “She would tell me about patient background and case history, then I would observe the whole session. Sometimes she would stop to explain what they were working on or if they were utilizing a diagnostic evaluation tool, she would show me what it was and explain it. She would share her screen at times, too, so I could see what she was writing. That was really helpful.”

Jayhawk Welcome Center

The New Jayhawk Welcome Center and Renovated Adams Alumni Center opened in February 2023. In the first few months of operations, the building welcomed 10,000+ visitors, including 5,000+ prospective students and hosted over 100 outside events. As a home for future students, returning alumni, and the KU and Lawrence community, the JWC tells our story and what it truly means to be a Jayhawk.

KU Growth

The University of Kansas welcomed its largest first-year class in 14 years in the Fall 2022 Semester. The first-year class was recorded as the most academically talented and diverse freshmen in KU’s history. KU leaders attributed the jump in first-year students to various factors, ranging from the university’s academic reputation, targeted recruitment strategies, a nationwide network of donors and alumni, and the profile of KU athletics.

Giving Opportunities

In FY23, the scope of our traditional giving opportunities continued to expand within and beyond Presidents Club. Throughout the year, 2,455 individual, non-PC donors gave an average gift of $71 to support programs and services that impact students and alumni. As annual giving becomes more prevalent at all levels for an increasingly significant portion of our demographic, the Association will continue to develop accessible giving opportunities.

Rock Chalk Forever

We reimagined what Rock Chalk Ball could be and reintroduced it as Rock Chalk Forever, emphasizing engagement, interaction and inclusion. The inaugural Rock Chalk Forever gave 600+ Jayhawks dressed in “Jayhawk Flair” a memorable evening at Children’s Mercy Park. The sold-out event solidified itself as our signature fundraiser.

Partners

Corporate Partners: Sponsors and Advertisers

We thank our 2022-’23 event and program sponsors and our print and digital advertisers. Their marketing investments help the Association serve students and alumni through communications and activities that strengthen the Jayhawk network.
