There’s no better way to show your Crimson and Blue pride on the open road than by displaying a KU license plate on your car.
Anyone in Kansas is eligible for a KU license plate. You do not have to be a KU Alumni Association member or a graduate of KU in order to put a Jayhawk license plate on your car.
Visit your county treasurer’s office. In addition to the $50 annual tax-deductible contribution to the KU Alumni Association, your normal state tag fees, vehicle taxes, and a one-time special plate issuance fee of $45.50 to create the plate is assessed. Kansas county treasurers (and DMV offices for Johnson County residents) are authorized to accept the $50 contribution when you pay your annual state tag fees and vehicle taxes.
The treasurer’s office (or DMV for Johnson County residents) will issue a temporary tag to use until your permanent license plate is mailed.
KU license plates are also available in Oklahoma, Maryland and Texas.
Requirements and procedures for specialty license plates vary widely from state to state. If you are interested in making Jayhawk plates available in your state, please contact legislators or other appropriate officials to learn more about your state’s process for approving and creating new specialty plates.
In Kansas, Jayhawk license plates are available to all alumni, family, friends and fans at your county treasurer’s office, or, for Johnson County residents, at the DMV. The KU license plate can be used on your passenger motor vehicle, motorcycle, recreation vehicle (RV), or non-commercial truck.

The initial cost is $21.15 per vehicle ($15 specialty plate fee + $6.15 mailing cost), with a recurring annual renewal fee of $16.66 ($15 specialty plate fee + $1.66 mailing cost) that is paid to Service Oklahoma in addition to yearly tag renewal fees and taxes.

It takes just a few steps to complete your purchase for a new plate at your county treasurer’s office, or, for Johnson County residents, at the DMV. Renewing your plate can be done at your county treasurer’s office or online.
Proceeds from the University of Kansas License Plate program will help provide financial assistance to KU students and fund the Jayhawk Career Network.

You may purchase a Jayhawk license plate at any time. However, to avoid paying a contribution twice in one year, the best time to purchase a plate is during your annual tag renewal process.
The Kansas legislation authorizing university plates does not provide for personalization of tags with words or phrases. Tag numbers are randomly issued.
Kansans renew their license plates during certain months that are assigned according to the first letter of last names. However, you may register for a new KU license plate at any time during the calendar year.
If you purchase or lease a different vehicle, your KU license plate may be transferred to your new vehicle in most cases. Transfers are handled directly at your county treasurer’s office.
Your license plate donation is 100% tax deductible as a charitable contribution. When the alumni association receives notification of your purchase or renewal, we will send a charitable receipt acknowledging your gift.
