How has being a Jayhawk helped your career?

Since graduation, being a Jayhawk was very influential in establishing my comfortability and connections since relocating to Texas post-graduation. I was recruited from B-School to join the oil & gas industry by a KU MBA graduate, fell into a circle of co-workers who became family, and networked with many fellow Jayhawks along the way.

Since moving to Austin, I’ve served on the Austin Jayhawk Alumni Board, hosted dozens of watch parties with hundreds of Jayhawks, and leveraged my alma mater for introductions to local business leaders. My career would look very different today had I not been connected with those people!

What career advice do you have for current college students or young alumni?

Network, network, network! If you’re a current student, use LinkedIn to find an internship with a company/industry you’re interested in. If you’re a young alum, connect with your local alumni chapter on Facebook, or grab a coffee with a local alum you found on LinkedIn.

KU Mentoring is open to students, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of the University of Kansas. Professionals who are looking for opportunities to connect with KU and provide assistance to Jayhawks are also welcome. Learn more about KU Mentoring here.
